WARRIOR NEWS November 3rd, 2008 Highlights— VARSITY SOCCER TEAM WINS 2008 NACA DIVISION III NATIONAL TITLE!!! The varsity boys’ soccer team did what no other Veritas Christian team has ever done. They brought home a national championship. It looked like it could be a quick exit for the Warriors as they dropped the first game in the double elimination tournament. Veritas did not lick their wounds though; they came back and licked their next three opponents to fight back to the championship game on Friday afternoon. Their opponent would be a familiar one located just a few miles down Interstate 40, Hickory Christian. The game was tight just as their regular season games had been. At the end of regulation, it was 2-2 off of two Pascal Mensah goals. The first overtime period saw neither team score, then lightning struck in the form of David Canta. The junior made a move and put the winning goal through the back of the net to bring home the national championship. Goalie Ben Hayes was phenomenal all week as he presided over two shut outs to help get the Warriors in the title game, then had 10 saves in the finals to help Veritas secure the win. Mensah, Hayes, Canta, and Anthony Errico were named to the national all-tournament team while Mensah was named the most outstanding offensive player of the tournament as well as capturing the 2008 national most valuable player award. Warrior head coach, Josh Stone, was proud of the way his players fought back. “It would have been easy for them just to pack it in after falling in that first loss to Fresta Valley (VA), but they came out that night and whipped a good Christian Heritage (VA) team 4-0. That is when I could see they were gathering the momentum to perhaps do something special. Thursday morning they won a hard fought 1-0 game over Collinsville (VA) then came back and defeated the defending Division III national champs, Cornerstone Christian (FL) 3-2 . I really felt at that point the guys had the confidence to bring home the bacon on Friday.” Soccer Team To Be Recognized At Crowne Plaza Tip-Off Classic—Coach Josh Stone and his All tournament players will present the national title trophy and plaque to the school at half-time of the Crowne Plaza Tip-Off Classic this Sunday evening at the Asheville Civic Center. Veritas Middle School Girls Volleyball Runners-Up— The middle school girls’ soccer team came into the conference tournament a #4 seed but clawed their way to the championship game. The Lady Warriors lost a heartbreaker in the finals. Courtney Hayes and Abby Chu were named to the all conference team. Fall Athletic Awards Celebration November 11th. The Fall athletic awards ceremony for all middle school and high school athletes who participated in a Fall sport will be held in the gymnasium on Tuesday, November 11th, at 6:30 PM. Admission is free. This year it was decided that Veritas would recognize our athletes in three separate ceremonies. We felt this would better honor each sport on a more equal basis as well as cut down on the length of the event . No refreshments or meal will be served. All parents, grandparents, and friends of the Warriors are invited. Varsity Girls’ Soccer Coach Needed For Spring. We are looking for a qualified individual who would like to coach our varsity girls’ soccer team this Spring. This is a talented bunch of hard working ladies. There is a stipend for this position. If you are interested or know someone that you feel would be interested, please contact Ricky Sayle or John Jordan in the athletic department. Crowne Plaza Tip-Off Classic Tickets Still Available.
